2020 Ramblings

2020 I ran about 1800 km's. This is not close to the distances I was doing in the past I'm pretty pumped about this. It is over 3x as much as I ran the year before, which I guess is more of an indication of how little I ran the year before. From end of 2017 to mid 2019 it just seemed to be one thing after another; injuries, new job schedule, extra life responsibilities that I didn't find or make the time for training,  and during a race in May of 2019 I realized just how out of shape I was, and just stopped running for pretty much the rest of the year. 2020 was a mental struggle to get back into a running routine, but I started doing mostly daily runs on workdays, and average over 200 km a month from March to October. I"m starting to feel speedy again. I've done significantly less long runs this year than I had intended when I did goal setting at the end of 2019 what with all the races being cancelled. But that was probably a blessing in disguise, as I've sorted accidentally ended up doing more short distances which has helped slowly get me back into my legs.

The whole goal setting thing for 2021 seems a little hard to do; as often in the past goals have been centred around races. Also, something I found this year was when I made my 2020 goal a tangible numerical distance goal is that when I hit that goal it was hard to keep up the motivation to do more (I rationalized by saying I was resting). So I think I'll try and do some general, as well as long term goals that should take the whole year.

- Be  better at running on days off. I found it easy to get in a habit of running on my work days, but the five days off sometimes it was hard to get motivated. I think part of this was due to travel restriction guidelines, and knowing many of the places I wanted to go were now behind a locked gate. So I'll have to spend some time making a list of places that I want to go that aren't behind a locked gate at a park that's been closed.

- Get better at accepting lower distance runs as being ok. Rather than having goals of ultra distance runs, I will set a goal of doing a 21 km long run every week, an if I do more that is a bonus.

- Run de sous mountain 1000 metre elevation circuit at least 10 times in 2021

- Find time to make a reasonable attempt at a 5 km personal best. Near end of autumn I did some after work runs with high effort, and tied my personal best once, but surely I can finally get to sub 20 (or 19) minutes for a 5 km if I actually did it rested and all that.

- Also, plan some 'virtual races' - maybe a super long run loops in dewdrop. That should be a lovely time in June.

- Personal goals. Respond to adverse emotional situations with a period of silence and reflection before responding.
